The Wildlife, Landscapes and Culture of Seldom Seen Southeast Alaska

Venture beyond the usual paths with one of the most immersive Alaska photography tours, designed for those who seek the wild, the remote, and the seldom seen. This journey takes you deep into the unspoiled frontier, where Sitka wildlife tours barely scratch the surface. Capture brown bears fishing in hidden coves, humpback whales bubble-net feeding in remote inlets, and orcas patrolling quiet fjords untouched by crowds. Drift past the seabird-covered cliffs of St. Lazaria Island, photograph black bears at the secluded Gunnuk Creek Hatchery, and frame the electric blues of Le Conte Glacier, where harbor seals lounge on floating icebergs – all while traveling aboard a custom-built vessel designed for up-close encounters.

Unlike typical wildlife expeditions, we cover up to 1,000 nautical miles, chasing the best conditions and rarest sightings. Our expert guides help you master wildlife photography in challenging environments, from stabilizing your shots on a moving boat to capturing the perfect light over vast, untamed landscapes. At the end of each day, retreat to remote lodges encompassed by Alaska’s rugged beauty, recharging for another day of discovery.

What You'll See & Do

Day 1 – Welcome to Sitka Sound
Join Captain Neil at 1:00 pm as we kick off our thrilling photo tour in Sitka Sound, known for its vibrant marine life and kelp forests. Seasonal highlights include brown bears feasting on salmon at Bear Cove. We’ll then head into the Gulf of Alaska to circle St. Lazaria Island, an incredible seabird sanctuary where puffins, auklets, murres, and oystercatchers nest in staggering numbers.

Lodging: Sitka Hotel
Meals: Welcome dinner

Days 2 and 3 – Chichagof & Baranof Islands or Hoonah Sound
Leaving Sitka behind, we depart early and begin our journey north, with sea and weather conditions playing a part in determining our course. We will explore the sheltered waters and remote shorelines around Chichagof and Baranof Islands, or we’ll navigate through Peril Strait and into the wildlife-rich Hoonah Sound. During our exploration, we hope to encounter our first humpback whales displaying the thrilling bubble-net feeding behavior.

Lodging: Icy Strait Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4 – Village of Kake
We travel south along the stunning waterfall coast of Baranof Island, setting our course for the native Alaskan Village of Kake. These waters are home to multiple groups of bubble-net feeding humpbacks, pods of hunting orcas, and the impressively large coastal brown bears patrolling the shoreline.

Lodging: Waterfront Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5 – Gunnuk Creek Hatchery
After a restful morning to recharge or explore the village, we’ll visit Gunnuk Creek Hatchery. When
available, hatchery staff will guide us through its operations. As you learn about salmon production, keep your camera ready—black bears are frequent visitors, drawn by the salmon run. This unique setting provides fantastic opportunities to photograph these powerful predators up close in their natural environment.

Lodging: Waterfront Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Days 6 and 7 – Petersburg
Our adventure takes us to Petersburg, a charming fishing town with deep Norwegian roots.
Along the way, we’ll chase wildlife through Frederick Sound, with chances to witness humpback bubble-net feeding, orcas on the hunt, and minke whales. We’ll seize the best weather window to explore the awe-inspiring Le Conte Glacier, surrounded by brilliant blue icebergs and playful harbor seals, while golden eagles patrol the mountain skies above.

Lodging: Scandia Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8 – Return to Sitka
Today we set our course back to our homeport of Sitka. We glide through still waters, scanning for orcas, porpoises, and the rare coastal wolf. Overhead, bald eagles watch from towering pines while every ripple reminds us of the week’s breathtaking moments—thundering glaciers, feeding whales, and friendships forged in adventure. Nature saves some of her finest surprises for this final home stretch. As we arrive in Sitka, we leave behind the glaciers and whales but take with us something far more lasting—new friendships, incredible stories, and a profound connection to this wild, beautiful place. Thank you for being part of the journey. We’d be honored if you shared your favorite shots and tagged us so we can keep the adventure going!

Lodging: Sitka Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and farewell dinner

Day 9 – Farewell
A Departure Crossroads: Stay and soak up more of Sitka’s magic with custom excursions like kayaking, e-bike tours, flightseeing, fishing, or an ATV adventure on Kruzof Island. Capture any final moments with your camera before heading home—or onto your next great adventure. Farewell for
now, with hearts full and memory cards overflowing with Alaska’s wild beauty.
