Many evenings will offer time to slowly motor along the shoreline in the tender. It’s amazing how much can be seen and heard along the shores in the quiet evening time. The schedule is incredibly flexible to allow for adaptation to the multitude of variables that can be encountered along the way.

Day 1 – Embarkation & First Photography Expedition
Embarkation time for the MV Denali starts at 12:00 noon, with all guests required to be aboard by 1:00 PM local time. Meet the team who will guide your adventure, grab a snack, and get settled into your cabin. At 2:00 PM, embark on your first scheduled photography expedition aboard the MV Catdaddy, during which we explore the waters of Sitka Sound and circumnavigate St. Lazaria, a 17-acre volcanic plug that is home to an estimated 500,000 nesting birds. Tufted Puffins, Ancient Murrelets, Murres, and Rhinoceros Auklets are a few of the plethora of species seen in the waters around the island. We will be on the lookout for Humpback Whales, Harbor Porpoise, sea otters, and other marine wildlife.

After a welcome dinner, you’ll return to Denali for the evening.

Day 2 – In Search of Humpback Whales
Leaving Sitka behind early aboard the Catdaddy, our course will take us through the nutrient-rich waters navigating narrow canals and piloting through the surging and swirling waters of Sergius Narrows. Venturing into Chatham Strait, we will search for groups of Humpback Whales bubble-net feeding. It is not uncommon to see groups of 12-20 Humpback Whales in these groups. Our planned anchorage this evening is Saook Bay. You may opt to help contribute to your menu by dropping Dungeness crab pots. As with every day during our voyage, anchorage spots will depend on the sea conditions forecasted as well as the reports of wildlife locations.

Day 3 – Waterfall Coast: Cascade Paradise
Today we will travel along the East Coast of Baranof Island, known as the Waterfall Coast with some small bays containing as many as 12 cascades. Several of these bays are great hotspots for brown bear viewing. It’s possible to see Sperm Whales in these waters. We may encounter a pod of Orcas hunting, as well as pods of high-speed Dall’s porpoises that patrol these waters and enjoy riding the wake of our vessel. Our favored anchorage for this evening is in Red Bluff Bay. The reddish brown exposed rocks formed are reminiscent of the Southwest US scenery.

Day 4 – Navigated Protected Waters
Our planned route today crosses the lower Chatham Strait to Kuiu Island. Here, we investigate the Tebenkof Wilderness Area, a preserve legislated to remain unspoiled for future generations, and venture into the Bay of Pillars. In these surroundings, we’re more likely to hear the blows of whales than any sound of man. The only human presence we might see could be a glimpse of a distant fishing boat. We will rendezvous our mothership in the protected waters of Portage Harbor. We’ll then go ashore at the native village of Kake and head to the Gunnuk Creek hatchery. If the hatchery staff can accommodate us, we will explore the inner workings of the hatchery. The creek that feeds the hatchery is also a fantastic location to photograph black bears feeding on the many spawning salmon species.

Day 5 – Electric Blue Glaciers
Our next destination is North America’s southernmost tidewater glacier, the Le Conte Glacier known for its shooter icebergs. Our course to the glacier is filled with glowing blue icebergs, many serving as a nursery for harbor seal pups. Look for soaring Golden eagles that nest in the mountain tops towering above the bay. Leaving the beauty of Le Conte Glacier, we arrive in Denali at Eliza Bay.

Day 6 – Five Finger Island & Admiralty Island
Today’s journey will take us past the oldest lighthouse in Alaska, the iconic and extremely photogenic Five Finger Lighthouse. It is located at the confluence of Stephen’s Passage and Fredrick Sound. The island hosts a unique habitat featuring exceptional plant life, including mosses and flowers rarely seen on the mainland. We will go ashore for a guided tour that provides access to a distinctive ecosystem you will not find anywhere else. The absence of mammals on the island and the natural canopy of trees have shaped Five Finger Island’s distinctive plant diversity. We will also explore the southern and western shorelines of Admiralty Island. This evening’s rendezvous point with Denali is expected to be Killisnoo Harbor.

Day 7 – The Islands of Hoonah Sound
Today’s expedition brings us into Peril Strait with an opportunity to fish and pull the crab pots that have been soaking since day two. Your catch will contribute to this evening’s dinner fare. As we travel through the islets and Islands of Hoonah Sound, we aim to photograph sea and shore birds, as well as harbor seals that occupy several rookeries in the area. Patterson Bay is our targeted anchorage this evening.

Day 8 – Journey Back to Sitka & Wildlife Sightings
On our final day, you may choose to go ashore and explore the dynamic tidal flats and estuary at the head of Deep Bay. Here, we often see brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, Bald eagles, and a wide variety of shorebirds that inhabit the junction of three streams. Later, we set sail for Sitka. Traveling through Salisbury and Krestof Sound, and heading towards Sitka, we will be on the lookout for rafts of sea otters snugly wrapped in the fronds of the sugar kelp forest. We will arrive at the Sitka dock in the early afternoon.

Farewell dinner will be at a local restaurant.

Day 9 – Leaving With Full Hearts & Full Memory Cards
You can disembark at any time before 11:00 am. If your flight requires an extra night in Sitka, we’re happy to assist with lodging, transfers, and additional excursions such as kayaking, e-bike rentals, flightseeing, fishing, or exploring Kruzof Island by ATV. This is a wonderful opportunity to soak up Sitka’s beauty one last time and capture those final photos. Reflect on the awe-inspiring moments you’ve experienced and the connections you’ve formed during this journey. For those heading home, say your goodbyes with full memory cards, a heart filled with joy, and a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing Alaska’s beauty will stay with you forever.

Lodging not included.

FAQs

Frequently Seen: Humpback Whales, Orcas, Dall’s Porpoise, Harbor Seals, Stellar Sealions, Tufted Puffins, A Variety of Colorful seabirds, Sea Otters, Brown Bears, Black Bears, Moose, Porcupines

Occasionally Seen: Wolves, Mountain Goats, Minke Whales.

Whale Behaviors: Breaching, Bubble-net feeding, Tail Slapping, Pectoral Fin Slapping.

Your captain will network with fishermen, captains, and research scientists to discover the hotspots for this type of action. We travel through the waters where this behavior is often found during this time of year.

Yes and Yes; There are definitely plenty of sealions, Harbor seals, and these are waters patrolled by Transient Orca pods.

Tufted Puffins, Black-Legged Kittiwakes, Rhinoceros Auklets, Murres, Black Oystercatchers, Pigeon Guillemots, Bald Eagles, and Arctic Terns–to name just a few. Viewing guides are available onboard.

MEMORY CARDS – You’ll want to have plenty of these, ideally enough that you won’t have to format any while in the field. Don’t forget a card reader!

PLUG ADAPTERS– If you are traveling internationally, you will likely need adapters for your plugs.

TWO CAMERA BODIES WHEN POSSIBLE – Why two? In case of accidental damage or electronic failure, you will have a back-up. With an additional set-up ready to go, you can quickly adjust if the action is at a different range than expected.

BATTERIES – Bring plenty of batteries for your cameras and chargers as well. Our boat is equipped with USB outlets and 110 AC outlets. You may want to bring a power bank to recharge your batteries.

LENSES – For most landscape and wildlife expeditions, a wide-angle zoom (like a 17-40mm), a general-purpose zoom (like a 24-70mm), and a medium telephoto zoom (like a 70-200mm) are standard. A 100-400mm lens is great for wildlife.

A comprehensive list will be sent to guests 90 days prior to tour.

I always suggest staying ready, as an amazing encounter can happen in the blink of an eye. I do not recommend using a tripod or a monopod.

Absolutely. Our proximity to the glaciers will depend on the ability to safely maneuver among the icebergs.

Yes, please wear rubber-soled shoes. While on the deck, always have 3 points of contact with the vessel–two feet on the floor and at least one hand on the railing. Walk slowly and always heed the captain’s warnings and advice.

Expedition-style travel means embracing the Alaskan way of life, with two berths (three beds each), sharing space fosters camaraderie and storytelling. This is more than just a trip – it’s an immersive experience where every moment, from cruising remote waterways to swapping stories at anchor, brings you closer to the wild heart of Alaska.

There is a maximum of 6 participants.

The tour takes place in the largest temperate rainforest in the world, so it’s not uncommon to experience rain. We are also traveling on waters that are exposed to the Gulf of Alaska, so we might occasionally experience choppy and rolling seas.

Often the clouds provide great lighting for your shots.

If you are prone to seasickness, please take any remedies at least 1 hour prior to leaving the dock. We also carry Ginger chews, which are known to alleviate nausea.
