Day 9: An Epic Day of Whale Watching: Photographing Humpback Whales in Southeast Alaska

Today was a day that exceeded all expectations. The weather and sea conditions in Southeast Alaska were nothing short of spectacular, providing us with the perfect opportunity to embark on an unforgettable adventure. Our destination: Tebenekof Bay, where we hoped to witness the mesmerizing spectacle of humpback whales indulging in bubble-net feeding.

Nature’s Grand Show: As we entered Tebenekof Bay, it didn’t take long for our eagle-eyed team to spot something extraordinary. In the distance, we noticed a gathering of whale spouts rising close together. This was a promising sign that these majestic creatures were feeding cooperatively, and our excitement soared. We approached with bated breath, and our patience was richly rewarded. Before us unfolded a breathtaking display of nature’s grandeur.

Humpbacks in Harmony: Not one, but two groups of humpback whales were engaged in bubble-net feeding, a phenomenon that continued for hours. The conditions were ideal for photographers, as the ring of bubbles percolating at the water’s surface served as a perfect focal point. Remarkably, we could even hear the bubbles as they rose to the surface, adding a sensory dimension to this incredible experience

A Thrilling Close Encounter: The highlight of the day came when the bubbles emerged within an astonishing 10 meters of our boat. The anticipation was palpable as we witnessed the whales erupting through the surface in a breathtaking display of power and grace, so close that we could almost touch them. It was a moment that left us in sheer awe, and the excitement continued as the two groups of humpbacks surfaced on both sides of our vessel.

Into the Wilds of the Forest: As the day’s thrilling activities came to a close, we reluctantly left the bay and made our way back to our cozy lodge. But the adventure didn’t end there. After dinner, we ventured into the

lush, enchanting forest, eager to discover more wildlife subjects that call Southeast Alaska home.

Capture the Magic: Today was a testament to the magic of Alaska’s wildlife and the incredible experiences that await those who embark on guided wildlife tours for photographers. Stay tuned as we continue our journey through Southeast Alaska, where every day brings new wonders and extraordinary encounters with nature’s most magnificent creatures.
