Seldom Seen Alaska Expedition – July 2023 Trip Journal

Day 5: Enthralling Encounters and Majestic Breaches – A Day of Wonders

Our voyage continued as we charted our course towards the idyllic Tenakee Springs. While our initial aim was to photograph the mesmerizing bubble-net feeding of Humpback whales around the Inian Islands, Mother Nature had a different plan for us, shrouding our path in dense fog that prompted an unexpected change in our itinerary.

Up-Close with Humpbacks: Unfazed by the fog, we rounded Point Adolphus of Chichagof Island, and to our sheer delight, we encountered a sizable group of Humpback whales. As we drew nearer, they graciously approached our vessel, granting our guests exhilarating close-up views and an unforgettable encounter with the distinctive fragrance of whale breath – a sensory memory to cherish! Although bubble-netting eluded us this time, the Humpbacks compensated with a series of incredible breaches, launching themselves out of the water approximately 15 times. Each breach was a breathtaking spectacle, especially when framed against the backdrop of the snow-draped Fairweather Mountain range.

Culinary Delights Amidst Nature’s Splendor: With the Humpbacks’ magnificent performance concluded, we sought out calm waters to indulge in a delightful lunch experience on the back deck. Burgers, sausages, and hot dogs sizzled on the grill as we relished our meal amidst the awe-inspiring Alaskan scenery. During our well-deserved lunch break in Flynn Cove, a pod of graceful Orcas graced us with their presence. Serenading us with their presence, they cruised gracefully along the nearby shoreline. Their sleek bodies glided through the water, enchanting us with their beauty and the tranquility of the moment, reminding us of the natural harmony that envelops us in this untamed wilderness.

As we continue this extraordinary photographic journey through the wonders of Southeast Alaska, each day unfolds like a captivating chapter in an adventure novel. With surprises at every turn and nature’s most astounding spectacles to witness, we move forward on this wildlife photography tour of a lifetime, eager to discover what the next day will bring in this pristine wilderness.
